Using the back ultra wide (0.5×) camera for selfies
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerSwitch to 0.5× on the back camera, prop the phone or hold it out, and use an Apple Watch to see the frame, or take test shots. It fits much more in than the front camera, especially for groups and scenery.
Why use it
On iPhones with an ultra wide back lens, 0.5× is much wider than a standard front camera.
How to frame it
- Apple Watch Camera Remote shows the live view.
- A test shot, check, adjust.
- Prop it and use the timer.
Watch the edges
Keep faces away from the corners, where ultra wide stretches most.
